Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1.5 cups barbecue sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 cup sliced onions (optional)
  • 1 tsp chili powder (optional)

Equipment

  • crockpot (slow cooker)
  • mixing bowl
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • two forks for shredding

Method

  1. Place the chicken in the bottom of the crockpot in an even layer.
  2. Sprinkle all seasonings evenly over the chicken.
  3. In a bowl, mix barbecue sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture evenly over the chicken.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or high for 3–4 hours.
  6. Remove the chicken and shred it using two forks.
  7. Return the shredded chicken to the crockpot and stir it into the sauce.
  8. Cook for an additional 10–15 minutes, then serve warm.

Notes

For extra juicy results, use chicken thighs instead of breasts. Avoid overcooking to keep the chicken tender. Stir occasionally if possible for even flavor distribution. Add more barbecue sauce at the end if you prefer a saucier texture. Toast buns before serving for added texture and flavor.
